Nunavut Financial Assistance for Students (FANS)

Nunavut's Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students (FANS) is among the most generous student aid programs in Canada. Like the NWT, Nunavut does not participate in the Canada Student Loans and Grants program — it runs its own territorial system. FANS provides non-repayable grants covering tuition, travel, books, and living allowances, plus remissible loans that are forgiven when graduates return to Nunavut.

Tips for Nunavut students

Practical advice for making the most of FANS and other opportunities:

  • Apply early — FANS applications open in the spring and funding is allocated on a first-come basis
  • Inuit beneficiaries under the Nunavut Agreement should also apply to NTI and regional Inuit organizations for additional funding
  • The remissible loan is forgiven if you return to Nunavut — consider this when planning your career
  • Even though Nunavut doesn't use Canada Student Grants, you can still apply for national scholarships (Schulich, Loran, Indspire)
  • Contact your school's Indigenous student services office — many universities have additional supports for northern students
