Alberta Student Aid

When you apply through the Alberta Student Aid portal, you're assessed for both federal and provincial funding in one application:

• Canada Student Loan: Federal loan portion (interest-free since 2023)
• Alberta Student Loan: Provincial loan portion
• Canada Student Grant: Up to $4,200/year (non-repayable, assessed automatically)
• Alberta Student Grant: Up to $375/month additional provincial grant based on need
• Application period: Opens each spring for the fall term

Alberta offers several merit-based scholarships administered through the MyPass portal:

• Jason Lang Scholarship: $1,000/year for Alberta students maintaining a 3.2 GPA at an eligible Alberta institution (renewable each year you maintain GPA)
• Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship: Up to $2,500 based on Grade 10-12 marks — no separate application if claimed through MyPass
• Louise McKinney Post-Secondary Scholarship: Up to $2,500/year for the top academic performers at Alberta institutions
• Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund: Multiple awards managed through alberta.ca/scholarships

Practical advice for maximizing your Alberta student funding:

• Apply through MyPass (mypass.alberta.ca) for provincial scholarships — this is separate from your student aid application
• The Alexander Rutherford doesn't require a separate application if you apply through MyPass — but you must claim it
• The Jason Lang Scholarship renews every year you maintain a 3.2 GPA — it's not just a one-time award
• Alberta Student Aid can be used at institutions outside Alberta — you're not limited to Alberta schools
• Apply early — Alberta Student Aid recommends submitting your application at least 6 weeks before classes start
